My Debt Has Prescribed, How Do I Remove It from My Credit Report?
March 24, 2025The Finfluencer Boom: Misinformation in Disguise?
In recent years, the explosion of finfluencers—financial influencers on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube—has created a wave of trendy, bite-sized financial advice that is being consumed by millions of South Africans daily.
From “credit repair hacks” to “how to escape debt in 3 easy steps,” these posts generate likes and shares at lightning speed. But behind the entertainment and flashy promises lies a harsh reality: not all financial advice online is safe, accurate, or legal.
As the Eastern Cape representative for the Debt Counsellors Association of South Africa (DCASA), I feel it’s vital that we bring clarity and caution to this conversation—because while social media might tell you what you want to hear, a registered debt counsellor will tell you what you need to know.
Why Finfluencers Are So Popular—and So Risky
Finfluencers know how to appeal to emotion. They’re relatable, energetic, and often promise instant relief. It’s human nature to want easy fixes, especially when you’re under pressure from debt. So when someone online says:
- “You can fix your credit overnight.”
- “Just do this one trick to write off your debt.”
- “Ignore the calls—they’ll eventually stop and your debt will prescribe.”
…it’s tempting to believe it.
But unlike doctors or legal professionals, anyone can present themselves as a financial expert online—without credentials, without regulatory backing, and without responsibility for the consequences.
The concern is that many of these finfluencers are not registered with any professional body and may even be breaking South African credit laws by offering advice or services they are not authorised to provide.
Debt Counsellors: Regulated, Experienced, and Accountable
Debt counsellors in South Africa are not social media personalities. We are registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and often belong to industry bodies such as the Debt Counsellors Association of South Africa (DCASA).
Our work is not driven by trends or popularity, but by law, ethics, and years of practical experience. We operate under the National Credit Act (NCA), which sets out exactly how debt counselling works—and how it protects the rights of consumers.
A registered debt counsellor:
- Provides advice in accordance with the NCA.
- Has relationships with credit providers to negotiate on your behalf.
- Offers solutions that are legally enforceable and sustainable, not just temporary feel-good tips.
- Puts your financial wellbeing and long-term stability first, even when the truth is tough.
We’re not in the business of selling dreams. We’re here to help people face their debt, take control of it, and ultimately become debt free—not just in theory, but in reality.
Debt Review: Not a Trend—A Legal Solution
Being debt-free is not a trend, a TikTok challenge, or an overnight transformation. It’s a journey—sometimes difficult, always worth it—that requires proper guidance, legal protection, and a solid plan.
Debt review, when done through a registered counsellor, is a structured, court-approved process that gives consumers breathing room while protecting their assets and dignity. It’s a path to real recovery, not a gimmick for content creation.
How to Check If a Debt Counsellor Is Legitimate
If you’re considering debt counselling, make sure the person advising you is registered and accountable. Ask:
- Are you registered with the National Credit Regulator?
- Are you a member of DCASA or another Association?
- Can you provide your NCRDC number ?
- How long have you been a registered debt counsellor ?
Consumers can also verify a debt counsellor’s membership status directly with DCASA by visiting www.dcasa.co.za. This extra step could save you from risky or even illegal advice.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Trade Your Future for a Quick Fix
Social media can be useful for general awareness, but when it comes to your finances, don’t rely on likes, reels, or viral posts. Your financial situation deserves more than fairy-tale solutions. It deserves real advice, from real professionals, working within real laws.
If you are struggling with debt, speak to a registered debt counsellor. We may not always tell you what you want to hear—but we will guide you toward the truth and give you the tools you need to change your future.
