NCR QUARTERLY MEETING – FEEDBACK
June 12, 2023Debt Counselling is a vehicle that consists of a driver and a passenger. For a safe journey and to reach the destination successfully, there should be good communication between the two. Similarly, in Debt Review, the Consumer has to have a thorough understanding of the Debt Review process; it is crucial to the success of Debt Review. The education of the Consumer empowers them with the necessary knowledge and information to make informed decisions and actively participate in the debt rehabilitation journey in good faith.
What should the passenger know:
- Awareness of Rights and Responsibilities: Clients who are well-informed about the Debt Review process understand their rights and responsibilities as participants. They are aware of the legal framework, protection mechanisms, and obligations outlined in the National Credit Act (NCA). This knowledge helps them exercise their rights and fulfill their responsibilities throughout the process.
- Informed Decision Making: By grasping the ins and outs of Debt Review, Clients can make informed decisions regarding their financial situation. They understand the implications, benefits, and potential challenges associated with Debt Review. This knowledge enables them to assess whether Debt Review is the right choice for their circumstances, evaluate alternative options, and set realistic expectations.
- Active Participation and Cooperation: When Clients are aware of the Debt Review process, they can actively engage with their Debt Counsellor and other relevant parties involved. They understand the importance of providing accurate and timely information, cooperating with the required documentation, and adhering to the prescribed debt repayment plan.
- Improved Communication and Collaboration: Knowledgeable Clients can effectively communicate with their Debt Counsellor and other Stakeholders involved in the Debt Review process. They can ask pertinent questions, seek clarification, and actively engage in discussions about their financial situation. This collaborative approach enhances the relationship between the Client and the Debt Counsellor, fostering trust and facilitating a smoother debt rehabilitation journey.
Secondly, the DC should be well-informed and knowledgeable. One way of doing so is to subscribe to a creditable association.
Joining a professional association specific to debt counselling offers several benefits and ensures that debt counsellors stay informed and have their interests protected. Here are the reasons why it is important for debt counsellors to join an association:
- Knowledge Sharing and Training: Professional Associations often organize training programs, workshops, seminars, and conferences to keep members updated on the latest developments, regulations, and best practices in the debt counselling field. By participating in these activities, debt counsellors can enhance their knowledge, skills, and expertise, ensuring they deliver effective and up-to-date debt counselling services to their Clients.
- Advocacy and Representation: Associations advocate for the interests of Debt Counsellors at various levels, including Government Bodies, Industry Regulators, and other relevant Stakeholders. They work to protect the rights and promote the professional standing of Debt Counsellors. By joining an Association, Debt Counsellors can have a collective voice and actively contribute to shaping policies and regulations that affect their profession.
- Code of Ethics and Professional Standards: Professional Associations typically establish a code of ethics and professional standards that Members must adhere to. These guidelines set forth the expected conduct, integrity, and professionalism of Debt Counsellors. By following these standards, Debt Counsellors demonstrate their commitment to providing ethical and high-quality services, fostering trust among Clients and the industry.
- Industry Updates and Compliance: Associations keep Members informed about changes in legislation, regulatory requirements, and industry trends. Staying up-to-date ensures Debt Counsellors can adapt their practices accordingly and remain compliant with legal and ethical obligations. This knowledge helps them provide accurate and reliable guidance to Clients and maintain their credibility as trusted professionals.
- Networking and Referrals: Association Membership opens opportunities for networking with professionals from related industries, such as Credit Providers, Legal experts, and financial advisors. Building these connections can lead to referrals, collaborative partnerships, and a broader professional network that benefits both the Debt Counsellor and their Clients. – Jan van der Colff ( Jan VDC Debt Counselling Services) NCRDC2281
